You want to know what I’m doing tonight? Researching a company in the deepest bowels of google, our company (our company three years ago, that is).
Why?
Here are some of the things I noticed and if your organization has gone through any changes in the last few years, you might benefit from doing some google searches yourself.
- Incorrect contact info – in the last three years we’ve moved offices and some directories still listed our old address.
- Incorrect services provided – we used to do more than real, simple video and some websites still referred to us as logo/graphic designers, which might be misleading to potential clients.
- Ghost accounts – I even stumbled upon an old YouTube channel we’d set up and haven’t logged into for over a year. No harm done, but it is certainly something that either needs to be done away with or used effectively.
So, you might want to do a little homework. You never know what you’ll learn about yourself or your organization.
This is such an important aspect of PR and SERP (Search Engine Reputation Management); even though the examples provided didn't threaten your rep, people can make nasty comments, or spam up the comment threads on ghost accounts, and if a business doesn't keep current on their search status, they won't have control of their online image.
