On Thursday, August 18th, Rocky Walls joined Julie Perry of BLASTmedia at the August Indy Social Media Breakfast, held at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
Both Rocky and Julie provided tips on how to revive or kickstart your video program. Rocky spoke about his Top 10 Video Dos and Don’ts. You can download his Prezi here.
In case you missed it, here is video of the presentation:
Whether you’re just getting started with your video program for your company or organization, or you’re just looking to make some improvements, this Top 10 List is a handy guideline that will help you ensure your videos are of the utmost quality.
Don’t Make Excuses
Do video! Don’t put off producing videos because you think it’s too hard or time consuming. It’s really not! Especially if you use Candidio.
Don’t Push the Red Button Without a Purpose
Do use this formula: My audience will _____ after viewing my video because _____. Having a goal in mind before you start recording will ensure that your content is focused and purposeful! Maybe your audience will be moved to donate to your non-profit after viewing your video, because you convey how your organization serves the community. Or maybe your audience will be moved to purchase your product or service after viewing your video, because your customer testimonial is so authentic and convincing.
Don’t Be Your Biggest Critic
It’s typical for a video to be delayed because whoever appears onscreen doesn’t like their appearance or the sound of their voice. Try not to agonize over these minor details. Do recognize your audience. They aren’t expecting a big, Hollywood production. An authentic and real presentation is going to be more compelling than a scripted, ultra-expensive and highly-produced video.
Don’t Forget the People
Do get several short interviews. Identify stakeholders within your company or organization who know your product or service best, and who are passionate about it! The comments from these folks will drive your video.
Don’t Use a Script
Do use bullet points. Set your talking points into a bulleted list and run through them during your interview. This way you can cover the topics you need to while maintaining a conversational tone. You can even run those talking points by your subject prior to the interview so that they’ll be familiar with the content. There’s nothing worse than a video in which it’s clear someone is reading off a script or cue card.
Don’t Forget the BRoll
BRoll is all the other shots that don’t include your interview. Do get lots, and different kinds! Check out this post from the 12 Stars blog about shooting BRoll.
Don’t Shoot Video When Stressed, Frustrated or In a Hurry
It’s okay to put off producing a video if today is just not a good day. If you appear tired or upset in a video, it will show. If it is time to start shooting video, do smile! ;) Tell your interviewees to smile as they speak. Not only will it improve how they look, it will also improve the quality of their comments!
Don’t Say “We can just edit that.”
Do shoot good video from the start. Saying “We can just edit that” is a sloppy practice. Be intentional about everything you shoot. It will cut down on the amount of footage you collect, which will expedite the editing process.
Don’t Focus on Producing a Viral Video.
Do focus on the quality of views. If you’re a small business 100 or so views could be great! For some people, that is viral! One hundred views that turn into 50 customers is better than a million views that turn into 10 customers. Often, videos that go viral paint someone or something in a negative light – you certainly don’t want that. Besides, when was the last time you were moved to make a purchase after watching a silly cat video that went viral?
Don’t Neglect Video SEO.
Julie Perry of BlastMEDIA suggested www.reelseo.com as a great resource for all things video SEO. We agree!
